"I still don't think this addresses my original negative comments about Europe. I wasn't criticizing Europe's style of democracy or freedom so much as Europe's history of appeasing anti-democratic, anti-freedom tyrannical movements and thus losing their democracy and freedom."

Europe's history of appeasing anti-democratic movements is limited to 1, Hitler's nazi movement. Major mistake that the creation of the steel union which lead to the EF and then to the EU is an attempt to create a bulwark against. Prior to WWII much of Europe was a collection of more or less democratic states not capable of defending themselves. Your negativism is rooted in historic facts that are do not describe the present situation.

As to the rest of your post, you are taking things out of context. Yes, eastern european countries wanted to be tied to the west but the west had given them to the USSR.

"they seem to have not been able to defend and preserve it w/o outside help (4 times by my count in the past century)."

4 times? I count 2 times which is 2 times too many. Perhaps this century will show an improvement.
