Europe's history of appeasing anti-democratic movements is limited to 1, Hitler's nazi movement.

I see similarities involving Europe's handling of terrorism. Terrorists have in the past been treated pretty leniently by European countries imo. Then, there's the seeming willingness of Europeans to throw Israel under the bus like the did the Jews, Czechoslovakia, etc. back in the '30's. There's the willingness to disregard things like genocide by Sudan, Rwanda (talking about France here). One looks at the large unassimilated Muslim communities in Europe (and the violence those communities produce - riots here and there, killing of political figures in the street, terror plots) and one wonders if Europeans will stand up to them. Your opinion is likely different but to me its the same pattern repeating.

As to the rest of your post, you are taking things out of context. Yes, eastern european countries wanted to be tied to the west but the west had given them to the USSR.

"Given them". OKay. Acquiesced in the existing Soviet occupation, I would say. Few in the west would have seen Soviet occupation of eastern Europe as a good thing, but if one doesn't acquiesce / give them - one would have had to fight and the appetite to do that was small.

"they seem to have not been able to defend and preserve it w/o outside help (4 times by my count in the past century)."

4 times? I count 2 times which is 2 times too many. Perhaps this century will show an improvement.

Hope so.
