Some of that bashing was justified because liberal elites who had marshalled the movement, had misinterpreted the principles of equality to mean among other things, sameness.

Sorry, Gem, you are victim of a 'strawman argument' here. Liberal elites, whatever that means, don't believe that equal rights under the law equates, to 'sameness', which would have to be a biologic description, wouldn't it?

Someone, somehow, convinced you of this and you clung to it in spite of the lack of logic involved.

This is a perfect example of what I was thinking of. It became fashionable to bash liberalism in the most illogic and prepostorous ways. I've sat back and watched a whole generation of people get 'dumbed down' by right-wing rhetoric and am so relieved to see it may be coming to an end.
