Motorola expands use of TI Omap for 3G, WiMax

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Motorola is broadening its use of Texas Instruments' Omap microprocessor series, standardizing on Omap2, Omap3 and Omap-Vox designs for a variety of 3G and WiMax products. The move is a further indication that Motorola may be pulling back from StarCore and other designs that originated with spinout Freescale Semiconductor.

TI will develop custom WiMax chip sets, including both baseband DSP and analog/RF components, for Motorola's WiMax push. TI also will provide process, foundry and design expertise for the WiMax effort. The chip sets will be implemented in 65-nm CMOS and will support voice, data and video over 802.16e mobile WiMax.
