Spansion loss narrows; sales up 16%

Last Update: 6:40 PM ET Jan 29, 2007

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Spansion Inc. the world's largest provider of NOR flash-memory chips used in consumer electronics, said late Monday that it narrowed its fourth-quarter loss from a year ago due to higher sales, tighter cost controls and higher profit margins for its chips.
Spansion reported a quarterly net loss of $25 million, or 19 cents a share, compared with a net loss of $48 million or 63 cents a share in the year-earlier period. Sales for the three months ended Dec. 31 rose 16% to $687 million, in line with the company's reduced forecast.

Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Spansion makes NOR flash-memory chips for cell phones, cars and TV set-top boxes. NOR flash is a technology that helps save data in consumer-electronic gadgets even when the power is shut off. It is used in low- and high-end cell phones.

The company had hoped to break even in the fourth quarter, but it was undercut by order delays from a few of its cell-phone customers and by reduced demand for its more expensive phone chips. It said that the bulk of the postponed orders will be filled in the first quarter.
According to Spansion, sales will be flat compared with the three months ended Dec. 31, better than Wall Street expectations. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial had forecast sales of $657.7 million.
