This was in the late 50's and the envirowhackos weren't so vocal in those days. Besides this was on a Marine Corps base, where the whackos had no access. It certainly was John Muir country for sure. We hiked, or rode horseback, over so much of that pristine, untouched land. Many tiny, clean (drink out of) lakes and streams. As the only surveyor on the project, I didn't have a lot to do. The base commander collared me early on and we went out searching for the boundary markers of the base. These were simply neatly piled rocks marking all the pertinent boundaries. We spent days and days doing this. This was really just an excuse for him to escape the mundane chores of running his office. Of course, it was terrific for me, as he was the base "boss" so nobody messed with me for the entire time. A great summer "protecting our nation". LOL
