Canada's Flaherty rejects extending trust tax break
Tue Jan 30, 2007 11:23 AM ET

OTTAWA, Jan 30 (Reuters) - Canada will not extend a four-year transition period before taxing income trusts, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty reiterated on Tuesday.

Flaherty made the remarks in a prepared text before appearing at a parliamentary finance committee to defend his October 2006 decision to tax trusts, starting in 2011.

In the text of his speech, Flaherty also said it would be a mistake to give a permanent tax holiday to energy trusts and said it would cost Ottawa C$3 billion ($2.5 billion) to extend the transition period to 10 years.
