Over the last five years we've overthrown both governments and in each case, though to differing degrees, created a power vacuum into which the Iranians have been free to extend themselves.

This was the ultimate delusion and blowback from the transformation scheme. If you assume that you can transform all the baddies in a region by spreading the seeds of goodness (by force and persuasion) then this would not be a problem.

But when transformation proves unworkable, the consequences of breaking down the existing balance becomes an entirely new problem in itself.

Which was one possible outcome predictable in advance. I can bet it was dismissed around a lot of heavy oak tables inside the Beltway in 2002.
