A stray thought - what if the whole surge thing is just political cover on the right so the US can start withdrawing in late 2007 with the slogan of hey, we did all we humanly could and it just didn't work, sorry.

That's much more than a stray thought. It's the most plausible explanation out there for what they are doing. Blame the Iraqis for not going along with the program. And get out.

What was the Bush phrase? As the Iraqis stand up, we will stand down. He didn't include the notion that if they didn't stand up, we will also stand down.

And no one, apparently, in the Bush administration is doing serious broad stroke ME policy save we will back Israel in whatever it chooses to do.

I saw some poll mentioned on CNN yesterday in which participants were asked something like, would you like for the Bush administration to go out of office now. The results were stunning but I don't recall the specifics.
