Phyrrus wasn't trying to defeat indigenous people, at least not directly. He and Rome where fighting over who would dominate the area. The winner (in this case Rome) was quite able to defeated a large number of determined indigenous people.

Eh?

Its the US taking the side of the local government who is itself in conflict against the indigenous people.
