Phyrrus wasn't trying to defeat indigenous people, at least not directly. He and Rome where fighting over who would dominate the area. The winner (in this case Rome) was quite able to defeated a large number of determined indigenous people.

Eh?

Rome wasn't the "indigenous people". It was a local power in Italy, but it had not yet conquered and assimilated all of Italy.
Rome and Phyrrus/Epirus where fighting about who would be the dominate power over groups of indigenous people that where neither Roman nor Epiruian.

Rome defeated Epurus' army, and later conquered and assimilated all of Italy (and eventually much more).

Its the US taking the side of the local government who is itself in conflict against the indigenous people.

You really believe this about Iraq?

I'd correct it to say some of the indigenous people. I'd also add that the situation is chaotic and complex, but yes I do believe that about Iraq because its true.
