Actually for the most part, he supported your general view on Iran regarding confluence of true national interests between US and Iran.
Personally i have come to view iran as i do the bush admin--regimes that dont fit the real mood of the people. Bush will end up in the dustbin of history unless cheney organizes a coup d'etat. Problem with semi-democratic iran is that you can throw out the bum who is president but the Mullahs are a layer that sits on top of the govt so how do you get rid of them or at least moderate them the way the chinese are. Iran and China look similar to me but the chinese have made more progress in this regard.
