I grew up with one or two horses in our corral. We also grew about 1/3 acre of alfalfa for feed, but still had to buy hay for the winter. They were all quarter horses and a variety of colors. The most interesting was a colt my dad bought from a group of Mexicans that lived near Trinidad, Colorado. They rounded up the wild horses that roamed the prairie in that part of the state. Once a year, they put them up for sale. Believe me, that was one WILD HORSE when we brought her home. Of course, she was terrified of us. Took months to settle her down, but she became as gentle as a lamb and a wonderful saddle horse. I can tell many stories about "Duchess".
