Well the US is certainly making it easier for Russia to do that if, in fact, that's what is happening. "There is no reason China and the US have to be enemies." I think that the Chinese have another view on that matter. To start with the Chinese(and the Indians) are competing with the US for energy. Chinese demand for oil is projected to increase by 50-60% by 2025. That alone is enough to cause hostile behaviour. "...why do you think Chinese subs are trailing our ships?" For the same reason that the US tracks Chinese ships.
