Elizabeth Arden 2nd-Quarter Earnings Decline With Acquisition Expenses

NEW YORK (AP) -- Beauty products maker Elizabeth Arden Inc. said Thursday fiscal second-quarter net income fell 22 percent, as sales of its newer fragrances at U.S department stores fell short of expectations during the holiday season.

Quarterly net income totaled $25.9 million, or 91 cents per share, versus $33.1 million, or $1.12 per share during the prior-year period. Excluding restructuring charges, earnings were 92 cents per share.

Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expected profit of 82 cents per share.

Revenue rose 19 percent to $410.8 million, from $345.9 million last year, helped by sales of fragrance brands sold to mass retail customers and new brands such as "With Love ... Hilary Duff" fragrance.

Analysts predicted revenue of $407 million.

The company said recently launched fragrances fell short of company expectations due to softer than expected holiday season sales at U.S. department stores.

Operating expenses rose to $114.7 million from $91.5 million.

Arden shares fell 70 cents to $18.20 in premarket activity.
