I was sort of on the edge of the horse world. My buddy's dad was a Ranger with the Forest Service, and his primary summer activity at the time was inspecting field sites. That required pack trips with horses and a string of mules. To me, that was like heaven on earth, and I always drooled about it but was never invited on a pack trip. I took a riding trip into the mountains with rented horses, but that's about it.

My dad got a shetland pony and we rode him a little, but he was a little too frisky. Once he ran me under an apple tree and knocked me off. I got the wind knocked out of me, and being a kid didn't know why I couldn't breath. I thought I was going to die.

I've always wanted to have a pack horse for elk hunting, but only packed one out that way.
