AMD and FTC issues. AMD has a yield problem? When did that occur? I recall a confident prediction of 1.5 million K6 devices in Q3 about a month ago. Now they produced 1.0 million. Big shortfall. Did it all occur in the last 4 weeks of the quarter? Where was Erika Klauer, the AMD booster, with her inside scoop. Why, she was touting AMD as a great buy.

I have been lurking on the AMD threads and anyone who suggested that there was a yield problem was immediately poleaxed by a chorus of AMD faithful. If you are a true believer, nothing will shake your faith.

On the darker side, there is an a lead article on Intel in the San Jose Mercury today that says the FTC is mostly interested in the "Intel Inside" marketing campaign that gives serious money to boxmakers who use and promote intel inside in their advertising. Although many other vendors do similar things, it may be regarded as a restraint of trade if the purpose is deemed to shut out competitors as opposed to simply promoting your own product. I am not a lawyer and don't know how this regulatory issue will play out, but I suspect that Intel will get some kind of warning to slow down the Intel Inside givebacks to the vendors. I don't think there will be formal sanctions, but that is always a possibility. Any comments from lawyers and others familiar with FTC rulings welcome.

Good investing to all,
Burt
