Yes, competition among the chip makers is good for AMAT. As many people know, MOT is a customer of AMAT.

This Motorola patent on the Cu process (filed Sep 1993, issued Feb 1995) seems comprehensive. MOT says it has other Cu patents pending. I wonder if this may be part of the reason why IBM did not try to file its own Cu patent, and just try to keep "trade secrets". Their secrets reportedly includes the composition of the diffusion barrier.
