Come to think of it, that's exactly what the guy said. The bolts were over tightened, splitting the gasket.

This was a rather spendy item for us. We were on our way back from Thanksgiving, coming up on Kennewick going 70 mph on cruise control. All of a sudden, clunk, tach and speedometer go crazy, then no power. We got towed in to a tranny shop, left it there for diagnosis, got a rental and drove the rest of the way home.

The diagnosis was complete failure. The thing had gone dry, owing to 'lack of maintenance.' Which surprised the hell out of me because I know the history of that car, and it has been serviced every 3000 miles.

Anyway, $3100 later including the rental car, we have a new tranny. Red puddles started showing up on the garage floor, so we took it to a local shop, and they 'fixed' the leak at the expense of the original shop. I took it to the original shop after Christmas. They hosed it off and checked, but found no leaks.

Still, red spots on my garage floor.

Took it in yesterday, and they fixed the overtightened gasket.

I hope.
