Abu Dhabi is both an emirate (there are 7 in the UAE) and a city. The city is on an island, but 300 meters off the mainland.

What are they putting all those buildings on an island? Why not put it in the middle of Abu Dhabi? How far offshore is the island? Why is the city named for some father?

Okay, that makes sense......the city is on the island and they are putting those cultural buildings on the same island. It sounded like the city was on the coast and the island was separate from the city.
