I was one of those people who thought going to war in Iraq was the wrong thing to do.. But having attacked Iraq it could still have turned out a bit different if the Army and Infrastructure (well oiled and working Bureaucracy) was left in tact.. And billions spent had gone to improve the lots of people.. Any changes then in terms of balance of power would have been gradual over time.. Obviously, water under the bridge..

Now you have various groups armed to the teeth.. I think Shia / Sunni differences can still be patched but you have a cancer in the body in terms of 'insurgents' AlQaeda types, who will never ever agree to make peace.. One of the other problem is there does not seem to be a professional Iraqi Army yet and without it, you don't have a govt. that can effectively crack down on various sundry armed gangs..

I think, only hope for a free Iraq, without a breakup of the country, is for a regional talkfest and understanding with Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Jordon etc.. all these role players who have a hand in what is going on and can pull it from the brink.. For that to happen, US has to show some leadership and not keep singing the same old song...

FWIW..
