Sultan, I understand that Wahabi is not a tag for all Sunni. The fact that Wahabi believers were executed for their Wahabi beliefs in Sunni led Iraq simply serves to illustrate the fact that in Iraq a huge amount of belief based violence is the norm. And that's critical.

You say that "for now, any distinction between brutalities between parties is just waste of time.." That is, however, precisely the point. It doesn't matter who's the worst or if there is a best and a worst.

All that matters is that those deep seated animosities and intolerances are there. It may sometimes simmer and sometimes boil over but with the strengths of their beliefs it's a major impediment to any kind of unified, majority led, quasi democratic Iraq.

And that's the issue that gets lost in all the "tree" discussion of "What can we do to keep alive the slim chance that a democratic, unified Iraq will ensue?"

The forest is missed; i.e., would we WANT a "free and democratic Iraq," would the Iraqis WANT a free and democratic Iraq and how would it WORK in practice.....not theory?

While American men and women are dying and Iraqis are getting slaughtered wholesale, I think we ought to take a good look at where we're heading. It's not enough to shrug our shoulders and say, "time will tell." Ed
