This past week I watched a show about modern disasters, one segment covered coal mining and spent a good amount of time on the specifics of coal mining in China, I believe one of the key points made was that in China 16 people per day lose thier lives in coal mining accidents. Naturally this average; is deduced by the accumulation of deaths per accident divided by days per year.

It was clear that China has a tremendous need for coal supplied electricity, and that the labor, not technology intensive structure of China's coal industry is at the root of the high loss of life in the China coal mining industry. It was posited that the sheer numbers of people willing to work the mines under current conditions, made the continuing risk reward acceptable.

Here is a link to a study on modernization of coal fired plants for electricity generation. This document deals with too much to breakdown here, its over 300 pages so only those insomniacs looking for nocturnal reading material should venture into this report.
