The State Penitentiary brings quite a few jobs to town and contributes much to the economy, as, I'm sure Washington State University does to Pullman. On balance, WSU probably provides more jobs.

However, having been in Pullman on football weekends, and having seen seeing the disruption due to heavy volumes of traffic (it took me over an hour the Sunday after the Apple Cup to go the 12 miles or so to Colfax), I'd say I'm glad the town fathers back in the 1800s opted for the prison. It has, as they say, a lighter footprint.
