Re: Isn't Comcast going to a Tivo software solution with their own DVR's?

They paid for a license, but I'm not sure they're going to make the switch for a while. I think the problem with the Comcast DVR's is that they're Windows based, and Windows just sucks at supporting the kind of RTOS operating systems support a DVR needs. TIVO's linux base is much better suited. What comcast needs to do to deploy TIVO to the boxes is to have them download linux onto a live windows box and re-format it into a linux box without any user intervention - and I don't think that can be done. Imagine Comcast having to manually re-image several million hard disks after a failed install...

Their best bet is probably to swap out the hard disks on some schedule over the course of a year or so, and that's a lot of service calls to make. They may be better off slipstreaming it in over the course of several years. People who hear about it and demand the switch can be asked to bring their units to exchange (to save Comcast the cost of making a service call, which must be >$100.
