Hey Steve,
In post 6167 you say 'technology is the goal' and now you say it isn't!!! Anyway, no sense in wasting bandwith arguing about what can run what, S/390 will continue to run the very high end, (remember when the PC guys said dump your legacy systems! That's when I loaded up on IBM, thinking about those hundreds of millions of lines of legacy code out there that nobody knew how it worked!!), and CPQ will continue to do just fine with server technology. It is all about cost, as you say, and that's why corporate American has reembraced the mainframe!!
