Yes subjective, but I have seen no indications (press) about deteriorating highways.. I was on as an example the highway from Beijing to the Great Wall a couple of times both by bus and car. While we indeed saw no Tim Hortons or McDonald's rest areas like the 401 has <g>.. the road was well designed for speed as the ride demonstrated and there were no defects. This highway is in as area with conditions no better than southwestern Ontario... Cold winters and hot summers.. it was just under 7 years ago. I was also on smaller highways around Hangzhou. Also good. Now how long do our roads last. Imagine if we did not maintain many of them each and every year ? and in many cases around TO as I bet you know... the same stretches yearly..
Sure it's anecdotal.. but to date what I've seen has been far truer than what I have read in the press.. or outlets like Stratfor.. then again I'm going to check in again this summer.. Maybe I'll change my view..

I think one point that escapes many in the west is that the Chinese leadership also understands that with the large population they need to provide lasting benefits... to keep the natives from getting restless... In China there are not many longing for the old ways like in Russia..
