Nasal spray shows promise as a cold cure

TORONTO - Hopeful evidence of a possible, if far off, cure for the
common cold was reported here Tuesday. In studies of 177 people
voluntarily exposed to cold viruses, those given an experimental nasal
spray six times a day for a week had less severe colds than those who
got a placebo. Scientists at the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial
Agents and Chemotherapy were told that the drug, which inhibits the
ability of the virus to attach to cells, was equally effective whether in
powder or liquid form and had few side effects. Of the 81 people who
got the drug, 69 caught colds (85%), but in the placebo group, 88 of 96
(92%) got colds.
