The unrelenting bombing of Lebanon was a consequence of Hizbollah kidnapping 5 Israeli soldiers and shelling Israel with Hizbollah's stupid rockets.
Hizbollah PROVOKED that attack. Again, if the US was getting constantly bombarded by Mexico and they were kidnapping our border agents and citizens, we'd walk into Mexico and flatten the region to ensure our citizens were safe.
You apparently have forgotten or did not know that this attack by Hezbollah was the latest in a long line of exchanges between Israel and Lebanon dating back to the 1980s when Israel illegally invaded Lebanon in hot pursuit of Palestinians. In fact, Hezbollah was formed back then to resist the Israeli invasion.
But even if there had not been this history between them, nothing in a million years would justify the brutal assault Israel inflicted on Lebanon. Nothing! My opinion of the Israelis was forever changed by that assault.
Tejek, you make a lot of good points and were part of the reason I changed my mind about Bush, but you have a soft spot for Arab terrorists that seems to come from a real blind spot.
I believe it appears I have a blind spot only because my perspective is more colored by the history that has gone down in the ME. On the surface, it looks like the Arabs are the bad guys; the Israelis the good guys. But when you start to dig, things are not nearly so clear. Israel forced its statehood down the throat of its Arab neighbors and while 50 years have passed, people do not get over these things easily. Its very easy for Americans to discount this issue; not so easy for the Arabs.
And let me add, if Israel can't get along with Lebanon....forget the rest of its Arab neighbors........then it will never be comfortable in the ME.
I never said Israelis are blameless, but much of their brutal attacks on Arabs comes from the desire to be LEFT ALONE by the damn terrorists. The fact that they can never live in peace drives a hell of a lot of frustration, which culminates in excessive use of force.
If Israel wanted to be left alone, why does it do flyovers over Lebanon and Syria periodically? Why does it continue to hold Lebanese and Syrian land illegally? Why do they disrespect the sovereignty of their neighbors when it suits their purpose?
Trust me, Israel acts with impunity because it knows it can...and does so with the backing of the US. Ideologues, very similar to the Bushies although even more hard core, rule Israel. And for that reason alone, they are not to be trusted.
Don't believe me? Drive a bear into a corner and then taunt it by throwing sticks and stones at it. Then when it charges you and tears you limb from limb, don't blame it for acting so brutally.
Mark my words.........one day that bear will be the Arabs.
