Prior to WW II, the US would never have invaded a country that didn't pose a threat to its well being.
HAHAHAAHAHAHA!!!!
I said that "didn't pose a threat to our [its] well being".
Canada (1812),
We were at war with Britain. Britain was stealing our sailors and restricting American trade with France because they were at war with France. Upper and lower Canada were provinces of Britain, and therefore, part of the enemy.
Mexico (1840s),
Texas had seceded from Mexico and asked to be annexed by the US. Mexico declared war on the US. Again, not at all like what's happening in Iraq.
Cuba
The Spanish American war comes closest to the Iraq war but even then, although never proven who was responsible, someone did blow up the Maine, and Spain did do things to fuel tensions between the two countries. Nonetheless, I will concede the point on this one.
[Central America (most of the 19th Century),
When did we invade Central America?
Native American lands (eternally)...
While true, that was not like invading a sovereign nation.
we've got a serious history of this sort of thing.
Seriously, Z, what you give as examples are not the same thing as the invasion of Iraq or Vietnam or Korea. We are experiencing a war nearly every ten years, not two or three per century. And almost all if not all of these conflicts have nothing to do with border lands or the expansion of the country. They have to do with what we call a necessary police action but what I am beginning to believe is a bully with too much time on its hands and a defense industry that wants to expand. |
