MLater this year, we should start seeing single chip solutions which are going to dramtically cut the cost of basic UMTS handsets. Whatever handset wins the contest it may well have a short shelf life. Right now, Qualcomm is the only one with an announced solution. They are sampling in the 3rd quarter and the absolute earliest I can imagine seeing handsets would be the 2nd quarter of next year. If this initiative has any success, I am sure that there will be a sequal to this competition. FWIW, I'm hoping that the winning solution will use a MSM6245.
