I think the news from Japan you just posted carries strong implications for Sonus, by far the dominant IP Voice vendor in Japan. First, DoCoMo clearly getting their clock cleaned, next up will be a slew of new IP applications from KDDI enabled by RevA. DoCoMo needs to get moving on network upgrades designed to match KDDI, even if they need to do another non-standard version of Rel6/Rel7 to get there. At a minimum they need to get their core network upgraded.

Second, Softbank is driving prices down, generally increased usage follows. Sonus has spoken repeatedly about how cheap buckets of minutes in the US has driven the need to reduce network costs, and said Cingular gets payback for trunking costs from their Sonus upgrade in months.
