Economaniack, > I don't remember a single important new product that was available in any volume quicker than 6 months after they claimed that production started.

That all depends on what your definition of "any volume" is.

As an engineer, if a product I was working on took SIX MONTHS from product qualification to limited volume (which fits my definition of "any volume"), that would be a sure sign of real production problems.

As for Barcelona, if their initial tapeout happened in June of last year and product qualification occurred this month, that would be an exceptional accomplishment. Usually it takes a full year to go from first silicon to production, especially on a brand new architecture on 4-way servers. And you would have to have great health on A0 silicon, and the signs point to anything but that given that AMD delayed their Barcelona demo until December.

My guess is that AMD is aiming to start Barcelona production on June 30th, then "paper launch" it to get the PR and claim they met their goals. How long it takes for Barcelona to achieve "any volume" whatsoever depends on how desperate AMD is to transition to it.
