I have been in the "do something " camp for years.
The "do something" camp reduces monthly bills, so, puts money in my pocket.I do not have to concern myself with global warming ..my first priority is selfish..ME!

Install compact florescent light bulbs everywhere you can. This returns 75 Percent.
Double insulation on anything that needs heating or cooling , if you can,and lobby government to wave taxes on insulation and energy efficient door and window replacements.
Wash clothes with cold water.
Replace cloths washer with front loader model.
Use a clothes line for drying.
Forget about the care and maintainance of a lawn, plant trees and shrubs or install astro turf instead.Plant a vegetable garden.

Replace water guzzling toilets with Australian Caroma 3 litre 6 litre flush...3 litre over 90 percent of the time.
Replace all inefficient appliances with efficient models.
Install hot water on demand water heater.
Drive a 4 cylinder car and lobby government to wave all taxes on 4 cylinder cars..hybrid and electric.
Consider installing a small solar.. wind system, to get the feel for it, and then expand.
Get an "in your face" hydro meter one that you can easily see.

Compare your monthly bills with neighbours, as you watch your payback.
There are no risks or unintended consequences as all of the above have pay back, and are desirable,if you sell.<g>
