Hello Andy,

I read and re-read the book The Innovator’s Solution that talks mostly about how one drive company would replace the leader in the field, only to be replaced in turn by some new upstart start-up company. Since I have some GPS experience, I have been interested in seeing how this trend might play out in the personal navigation arena.

Trimble could have been the leader is this area, but they could never get to a consumer price point for their handheld products. After one or two products they got out of the market and stayed out until recently. There is no way they can catch Garmin now.

The book suggested that a company would allow entrants into the low-end of the market, while the company itself maintained the lead at the high-end. Because this allowed the start up to gain experience and confidence in a new market, they could slowly build revenues and when their products were “good enough,” take over the middle ground that had become a commodity area.

Garmin have lots of quality products, and some with very good margins (e.g. glass cockpits). However, they need to continually innovate and the bottom end. In my mind this means an internet connection of some kind - like the Mobile 20 unit. They need to architect a deeper integration into cell phones.
