Ramtron's ESDRAM may have its day yet - RAMBUS seems its most direct copetition. The September 22, 1997 PC Week has an article (can't find it in electronic form) on page 72 "Pentium II vs. PentiumPro: A Dead Heat" that highlights the need for a high speed motherboard and RAM. A 300MHz Pentium II is only 9% faster than a 200MHz PentiumPro! - Can you say RAM bound? The cache in the PentiumPro is superior and results in negating the 100MHz speed advantage of the Pentium II! ZD Labs also posted an article a few months ago that found no advantage of purchasing any Pentium above 233MHz for "demanding graphical work" due to the 33MHz PCI bus slowing the processor due to bus lock. The AGP will solve this a bit, but the mother boards are still locked at 66MHz and there are usually more than two motherboard cycles per PCI bus cycles (depending on the program running and if block moves are limited) - so the motherboard speed limit (RAM transfer limit) played a big part in the cpu being speed limited also. Bottom line - any cpu above 233MHz is a waste until a higher speed RAM interface is available.
