I wonder if you are familiar with Thomas P.M. Barnett

I'm familiar with his work, and we've corresponded from time to time. He has many interesting ideas, but I'm not convinced that his approach would have produced success in Iraq. I'm not convinced, in fact, that any approach that the US could have taken would have produced success in Iraq.

The Bush administration's incredibly inept assessment of the difficulty of establishing order and functioning government in Iraq made failure inevitable, I believe. I also believe that accurate assessment of those challenges would have rendered the question of success or failure moot, because if those challenges had been accurately assessed there probably wouldn't have been a war in the first place.
