Doesn't seem like the type of thing one could or should predict.

That's a very odd statement. We could have rather easily predicted it, given Yugoland, Algeria, and other such places who lost heavy handed leaders, or dabbled in democracy without populations equipped for the affair.

As far as the should part, it seems rather obvious that one wants to consider as many ramifications as possible, rather than have a philosophy of "think no evil". Ostrich thinking does not strike me as useful anyway.
