"I thought sugar cane produced more ethanol per lb or whatever the metric is than corn?"

Per acre, is the usual metric. Think about it, the only thing that can be used in corn to produce the alcohol is the kernels. The cob, shucks and stalk are not used. While with sugar cane, the juice is in the whole stalk. In addition, all you have to do is run the stalks through rollers to squeeze the juice out, prepping corn is more complicated.

Thanks. That makes sense. Unfortunately, sugar cane grows well only in a small portion of the US.
