True, weather's not doable YET on an NT system. But taking my
earlier example (stock exchanges), that's a lot of data, a
lot of I/O, and a lot of parallelism. This technology CAN
be brought to bear on things like weather calculations.
People like Tandem and Oracle and HP have instead brought these
kinds of systems to bear on transaction processing against
databases.

But now the technology base is broadening rapidly to DSS
and data mining. A lot of similarity between the computational
requirements of data mining and weather patterns. These
are massively parallel systems working against a single
gigantic database image we're talking about here.
More profitable than selling systems for weather analysis.

Every "mainframe" application is technologically
feasible on existing parallel, scalable, near-commodity
architectures. The economics of it will dominate eventually.
IMHO, Cpq has the right outlook and marketplace image to make it
happen sooner rather than later (not to mention the financial
muscle). With the Tandem purchase they have the technology
and the experience competing with mainframes directly.
