Incompetent or not, we're right on Iran's border now.

And up to our necks in a tar pit that we can't manage. That doesn't pose much threat to Iran. In fact, Iran's widely presumed ability to ratchet up violence in Iraq (I've no cause to doubt it) is a powerful deterrent to any attack on Iran.

A US presence on the border might be a factor if an invasion of Iran were being contemplated, but not even the most extreme neocons are talking seriously about that. If air attacks are under consideration, the US presence in Iraq is more liability than asset.
