Westray was an example of the misery of Gov't stupidity. The N.S. Dept of labour had asked for operational safety improvements but they were not done. Upon subsequent inspections, Curragh Resources should have been shut down until brought up to code but Government had $ 80 million in their make work private partner initiative. Good Buddies instead of dispassionate protectors of labour. Sucks!! Mine manager Gerald Phillips went off to work for someone I had been invested in in Central America, can't recall, Greenstone? Changed my view of them. CEO Clifford Frame is still active in the industry and was in the news in the last couple of weeks, did not miss a beat. The results, new Labour regulations in Nova Scotia, now I cannot run my video rental store without having staff trained in first aid to protect the clerks from the dangers of the workplace foisted on them by their evil overlords. I must have a "safety committee" chaired by a staff member elected by his/her peers so that I cannot have a puppet safety officer, they must have annual meetings and keep minutes. I have no stairs, no machinery, no deep fat fryers, just counters, shelves and 3 oz dvd's!! I was inspected and found wanting by the officer, an out of work coal miner!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes, Newfoundland won't be a barrier to a good mine. Cheers, Ogi
