I think the Republicans have been using the internet much more effectively than the Democrats.

They have someone put up a negative story and then one of their flunkies (like Drudge) posts it on his site and then it gets spread all over the net by little drone posters. Eventually it gets so much play that one or more of the Networks mentions it (usually Fox, if you can call them a network) and then the rest feel oblidged to comment on it. It can be totally untrue and absolutely ridiculous, but it gets out there and provides fodder for the ground troops that actually talk to voters.

The Obama "Madrassa" story is a case in point.

The Republicans used the same sort of tactics in 2000 to beat McCain in S. Carolina. In that case they just fed the slurs directly to the ground troops so they could propagate them.
