I am sick and tired of everyone blaming "bad intelligence" for the leading us into the Iraqi war.

Two things led us it this idiotic war:

1) Paranoia fueled by the 9/11 attacks. A century from now historians will be pondering the effect of 9/11 on the American psyche. The French tried to talk some sense into us but instead triggered an anything anti-french frenzy. Anyone remember "Freedom fries?" Bush could have blamed 9/11 on Martians and 65% of Americans would have supported him.

2) Cowardice on the part of Congress and the Secretary of State. Anyone who watched Colin Powell's presentation at the UN with an open mind would have concluded that there was nothing there. Drawings of a "mobile chemical weapons lab" based on information provided by an unnamed source? Try getting that past any jury in any American courtroom. Powell was the one person who might have been able to prevent this disaster, but he lacked the courage to see what was in his face.

Congress was afraid to be seen as "soft" on terrorism so it abdicated its constitutional responsibility and gave Bush carte blanche to invade Iraq. I hold my nose every time I listen to John Kerry and Hilary Clinton explain why they voted to abdicate Congressional responsibility. Only Senator Robert Byrd had the courage to take a stand against this fiasco and try to talk America from jumping off this cliff. When "Profiles in Courage - Leadership after 9/11" is written there will be but one chapter - Robert Byrd.

The problem wasn't "bad intelligence". The problem was NO intelligence in the halls of Congress, the media or the collective mind of the American people. Bush pulled off a scam no more complex than a Nigerian e-mail purporting to promise riches in exchange for a bank account number, and America fell for it.

The sooner people stop trying to assign blame elsewhere and accept responsibility the better off we'll be.
