I just don't see corn as a long-term source of ethanol, because of its impact on US food prices and world food exports. Switchgrass is better alternative if we have the land to grow it. Many supporters of ethanol point to Brazil's experience of crops as providing a big supply of ethanol, but they forget that Brazil is near the equator so plants grow faster and in greater quantity there as opposed to in our climate. One good thing might be that we wean ourselves off of corn syrup and go back to cane sugar; corn syrup tastes terrible and is being blamed, in part, for the US obesity problem because the body reacts differently to corn syrup than it does cane sugar. Anybody actually drunk a cola or other soft drink recently made with cane sugar: they taste so much better.
