I parked on the Merchants side of the street.

My kid had a soccer game this morning (indoor). Our usual routine after a game is to go downtown to Brights, a real old-fashioned candy shop with hardwood floors, an area to watch them make the candies, and various candies in glass jars and sold by weight. I popped into Merchants for the bagel and coffee on the way back to the car.

As far as Merchants v. Starbucks, well... SBUX is so... corporate.

I like Merchants for its ambience. Old wooden floors, 25' ceilings, great baked goods and good coffee. I'm not a big Latte Lover and prefer a cup of drip made with Walla Walla Roastery Merchant's Blend coffee. Oh, and there is cost. A muffin at Starbucks is $1.75, at Merchants, $0.75. A bagel at Merchants is $0.50.

Bob Austin, who owns Merchants, has a sign up by the door. No dogs and no Staarbucks. Shows the red circle with a diagonal line through it, with a picture of a dog and a Starbucks cup.

Finally, I like to support local merchants. No pun intended.

This is what small town life is all about.
