Report: Humvees facing armor shortage

WASHINGTON (AP) - A general says the Army is moving quickly to put new armor on Humvees that have become a prime target of roadside bombs in Iraq.

The Washington Post reports there's a shortage of armor for the vehicles at the same time they're facing a rising threat from E-F-Ps -- explosively formed penetrators. They shoot out fist-sized wads of nearly molten copper that can penetrate the armor on an Abrams tank. One soldier says the typical roadside bomb is "like a shotgun blast" but the E-F-Ps are like "a rifle."

The Post says the Army has ramped up production of the armor for the Humvees but the upgrade may not be completed until this summer.
