Valentine's Day - what a good idea! Thanks. (Why didn't I think of that?) My mom loves this pie and I hadn't thought of Valentine's Day, and this one is going to be a tough one for her, so I might just do that.

I usually do top it with berries, but tend to wait for the fresh berries down the road to make their appearance before baking one. Then I slice them and put them on the pie as soon as it has cooled down but before it goes into the refrigerator. By the time it comes out, berry juice has usually seeped into random parts of the pie. (If the berries are particularly beautiful, I just use them whole.)

Another great topping is crushed pineapple, not a combination I would have thought of when first suggested to me 20+ years ago, but one that turns out to be very tasty as well.
