Republicans are under the misunderstanding that its wrong for a leader to pay attention to what his/her constituents want.

That's a straw man. Almost no one is saying its wrong to pay attention to the desires of constituents. But there is a difference between paying attention and being a slave to polls. If ta politician changes his stated opinions and votes on important issues of principle because a poll shows some idea or policy has gained or lost support, then there is no way for a voter to know what they are going to get by voting for that politician.

Constituencies don't change their thinking overnite......esp. in this country.

Never said they do. Usually they don't. But the most popular side of particular issues can change several times during the course of a president's or senators term.

I'm not expecting politicians to be rigid, or never change their mind (either because of shifting popular opinion, or any other reason), but some level of consistency is important, otherwise you have no idea of what you are voting for each election.
