I guess we were... (and then I came back with that remark about Rome's eventual fall, from their position of being the known world's 'policeman'.)

My point being, simply, that it *is* possible to get over-extended, hollowed-out on the inside, and burn out at the top of the heap if you can't keep a competitive advantage over your rising competition, and keep a sound economy and sound monetary system.

(In other-words, it is not only possible, but many examples can be found for it in history, to be your OWN 'worst enemy' by not tending to the 'knitting', becoming over-extended and weakened....)

Great empires seldom fall from outside attacks... until they are hollowed-out and weakened *first* by internal decay.
